There’s nothing quite like the excitement of a child’s very first ballet class — the first pair of ballet shoes, the sparkle in their eyes, and the first graceful plié they’ll remember forever.
At Gay Wightman School of Ballet, one of Melbourne’s most established and respected ballet schools, we understand that this moment is special not just for your dancer, but for you too.
Whether your child dreams of twirling like a ballerina or simply wants to move, smile, and make friends, we’re here to make their first experience one filled with joy, confidence, and belonging.
What to Bring to Class
For your dancer’s first day, here’s a simple checklist so you both feel prepared:
- Ballet shoes – if you have them (our studio can assist with fittings if you need a pair).
- Leotard and tights – our friendly staff can guide you to our correct studio uniform.
- Hair neatly in a bun – it helps dancers focus and feel part of the class.
- Water bottle for after class – dancing can be thirsty work!
- Big smiles and open hearts – the most important accessories of all.
If it’s your child’s trial class, there’s no need to worry about having everything perfect, they can wear anything easy to move in for a trail class — we’ll gently guide you through it all.
What Happens in Class
Your child’s first ballet class is designed to be welcoming, nurturing, and joyful. Here’s what you can expect:
- Warm greetings: Our teachers introduce themselves and make sure every child feels comfortable.
- Gentle stretches: To get little bodies moving safely and confidently.
- Basic ballet positions: Learning how to stand tall, point toes, and move with grace.
- Creative movement and storytelling: Dancers might imagine they’re butterflies, fairies, or explorers — using ballet to express emotion and creativity.
- Encouragement and praise: We celebrate effort, not perfection. Every step is a success!
Most importantly, your child will leave smiling, feeling proud of themselves and excited to return next week.
Preparing for a Smooth Start
A few tips to help your first day go beautifully:
- Arrive 10–15 minutes early to settle in and meet your teacher.
- Encourage your dancer — sometimes little ones feel shy at first, and that’s perfectly normal.
- Take photos outside the studio before class — the first day of ballet is a milestone worth celebrating!
- After class, ask what your dancer enjoyed most — you’ll be amazed by the details they share.
It’s Never Too Late to Start
We often hear from parents who think their child “missed the window” to start ballet — but the truth is, there’s no such thing. Whether your dancer is three or thirteen, ballet builds confidence, posture, discipline, and joy at any age.
Our programs cater to all experience levels — from Beginners through to Pre-Professional Extension Programs with the Melbourne Ballet Company — so every dancer can find their perfect place to shine.
