This week we celebrated something truly extraordinary — our beautiful Margaret turned 92. And do you know where she was? Exactly where she is every week: at her Monday morning adult ballet class.
No shortcuts. No “I’m too old.” No excuses.
Just movement, music, and joy.
Margaret trains under our inspiring adult ballet teacher, former The Australian Ballet dancer Muriel Simkiss, and she completes a full class with grace, focus, and determination. If that’s not proof that age is no barrier, we don’t know what is.
But Margaret isn’t a miracle. She’s a message.
Ballet is one of the most powerful ways to stay youthful — not just in body, but in mind and spirit.
Ballet Keeps the Body Young
Unlike high-impact workouts that strain joints, ballet builds strength in a controlled, intelligent way.
For older adults, ballet helps with:
- Balance — reducing the risk of falls
- Posture — counteracting years of sitting and screen use
- Joint mobility — gentle, continuous range of motion
- Core strength — protecting the spine
- Muscle tone — especially in legs and hips
- Bone density support — weight-bearing movement is essential
Ballet uses small stabilising muscles most workouts miss. That’s why dancers often move better than people half their age.
Ballet Keeps the Brain Young
Every class is like a puzzle for the mind.
You are:
- Remembering sequences
- Coordinating arms and legs
- Listening to music
- Adjusting timing and direction
This challenges memory, focus, and neuroplasticity — all crucial for keeping the brain sharp as we age.
Ballet Feeds the Soul
Here’s the part people don’t talk about enough.
Ballet:
- Brings joy
- Reduces stress
- Creates community
- Gives a sense of achievement
- Keeps creativity alive
Margaret doesn’t just come for exercise. She comes because she loves it. And joy is one of the greatest youth-preserving forces we have.
Ballet Is Gentle — But Powerful
People often think ballet is only for children or professionals. In reality, adult ballet classes are designed to be:
- Low impact
- Adaptable
- Supportive
- Non-competitive
- Encouraging
You work at your own level. Your body improves week by week.
Age Is Not the Limiting Factor
The biggest barrier isn’t age.
It’s the story we tell ourselves about age.
Margaret shows us that the body thrives when we keep moving, learning, and showing up. Ninety-two years young — and still dancing.
That’s not luck. That’s lifelong movement.
It’s Never Too Late to Start
Whether you:
- Danced as a child
- Always wanted to try
- Haven’t moved in years
Adult ballet welcomes you.
You don’t need flexibility.
You don’t need experience.
You don’t need to be “fit enough.”
You just need to walk through the door.
Come Dance With Us
If you’re looking for a class that strengthens your body, sharpens your mind, and lifts your spirit, ballet might just be the secret.
Movement is youth. Music is medicine. Ballet is joy.
And there’s always room at the barre.
